Bishop's Hull Flower, Fruit and Vegetable ShowThis society has been running certainly for 80 years and most likely a lot longer. I have schedules from 1925 and 1937 informing us it was an important village event, with races from Taunton, a Gymkhana, military bands and all sorts of sideshows, pageants etc. The show is held always 2 weeks after Taunton show, usually the Saturday around the 14th. August. The assistant secretary in 1937 Charlie Smith was still Chairman when he died at the age of 90 odd. He was also a well-known judge in the area. At his 90th. Birthday party at the Frank Bond Centre he said to me," the show has to keep going ,1 have done the job for years so it's up to you now" it's a village event and must be for years to come. I took over the secretaries' job for the second time, in the March of 1998 the first being in the late sixties and seventies until I moved away from the area for 20 odd years and recently 7 years ago moved back into the village and now we have built the show back up again with a very good committee. They are. President; Lady Skelmersdale We hold the Show annually, 3 or 4 meetings to arrange the show, and in May we have an open social evening where a speaker or a team of gardening experts will answer your gardening questions and queries. This is a free night out, just a bring and share supper and we supply teas etc. We hold a raffle and plant stall and hope we can make a few pounds toward the cost of running the show, it is usually well supported. Our schedules are available from around the end of May and sec. Chairman has copies also Tim the Butcher keeps a pile in his shop for would be exhibitors, last years exhibitors get one delivered . We get some sponsorship for classes from Avery Plant centre, Rumwell Farm shop, Willowbrook Nursey and Monkton Elms. And a few give much appreciated raffle prizes. So if you have never tried showing your veg. Fruit, flowers, handicrafts, cooking, art, photography, wine making, and children's classes then give it a go, you may enjoy it, there is something for everyone even a class especially for our residential homes for the elderly and very strong it is too, with the Manor leading the field. We, together with the Avery Plant centre, hold a class for Hanging baskets and another for the "best show of containers in the village" ie boxes, baskets, tubs, etc. etc. to be seen from the road, this was done to encourage our villagers to make the village look colourful. There are cash prizes and you need not enter as this is judged automatically the week of the show. Photos of Bishop's Hull Flower Show Any questions or queries about the flower show contact Roy Baker
